Don Harmon Endorses Maggie Yates!

After coming out on top of the four-candidate primary for Spokane County
Commissioner in District 5, Maggie Yates received another shot in the arm
with the endorsement of one of her Republican opponents.

Don Harmon, former mayor of Airway Heights, who came in third in the
primary, recommended Yates for the job with the blunt assessment about the
current incumbent “Al French needs to move on.”

Harmon, who served as mayor of Airway Heights in the 1990s, was drawn to
run in order to give his party another choice for commissioner. But when it
came time to throw his support to one of his competitors, he picked Yates.

“I’ve been impressed by Maggie’s campaign and feel she is the fresh voice
the county needs to move forward toward bipartisan solutions,” he said.

Yates was excited and humbled by Harmon’s endorsement.

“It’s clear that Don understands the needs of the region,” she said. “The fact
he has endorsed my campaign instead of French’s is a testament to his
appraisal that the County needs a new, collaborative direction.”

Harmon received nearly 12 percent of the vote in the primary election.
French received 40 percent and Yates 45 percent. Given Harmon’s party
affiliation, French believes the former mayor’s votes will become his in the
general election. But Harmon’s endorsement of Yates throws that calculation
into disarray.

Yates agrees. “It is wishful thinking to assume votes for Don will
automatically go to French. The truth of the matter is that those voting for
Don were voting against the incumbent. I will be working hard during the
general election to build on this endorsement. And I will never assume that
anyone’s votes are mine simply because of their party affiliation.”
